Hello West Parents,
I hope you were able join your students during Parent’s Day on April 26th. We had excellent participation in our first Parent’s Day and over 75 parents were able to stay for our West Parent Group meeting. It was exciting to hear Dr. Adams announce that West School has received the J. Russell Kent Award from the San Mateo County School Boards Association. This prestigious award recognizes outstanding and innovative education programs. In particular, the association recognized West School’s Operation Risk, which challenges teachers to take risks by exploring new ways to improve student engagement. Congratulations to all of our staff! During the meeting, we also had an opportunity to hear Superintendent Ranii provide more details about the district’s recent expenditure reduction decisions and how that is being coordinated with staffing changes at West in the next school year.
We are in the midst of Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week. I hope you take advantage of this opportunity to express your appreciation to the staff members who work with your students, through the Staff Appreciation lunch and the other recognition activities planned for this week.
Thank You
I’d like to thank all the parents who have been busily contributing to major projects and events in May and June—Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week/Lunch, HTV, Yearbook, 4th Grade Yosemite trip, 5th Grade Memory Video, and 5th Grade Promotion Activities. Your time and effort on these projects mean a lot to the staff and the students at West.
In recognition of Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, I’d like to extend my thanks to all the administrators, teachers, and staff at West School, for everything you do for our students to help them develop academically, as well as socially and emotionally. As I have watched you at work, here is what I especially appreciate:
- Professionalism—You know your craft and our children. You are continually learning and improving, and you are willing to take risks so you can improve professionally. The example that comes to mind is your engagement in Operation Risk, to experiment and to try new things, so you can improve how our children are learning.
- Passion and Pride—You go the extra mile in making sure our students receive the help they need, can be successful, and are challenged. Some of my son’s teachers have taken time outside classroom instruction, to provide additional support to him and to keep him on track.
- Partnership—You view our students’ education as a partnership between the teachers, the staff, and the parents. We were able to work together this year to create our first Parent’s Day, and you creatively engaged the parents in our students’ learning.
Our upcoming Volunteer Appreciation Tea is hosted by our Dr. Adams, teachers, and staff. It will be at 9:45 on Wednesday, June 13. If you’ve been a volunteer at any level during the school year, please come! Click here for more information.
Get Involved
There are many ways you can volunteer and we are taking signups for chairperson and volunteer positions for the next school year. Some volunteer opportunities are for an event or one-time only, some occur outside school hours, while others occur once a week or once a month. Decide on what works best for you and sign up. We will be taking sign ups at the Volunteer Appreciation Tea and our last Parent Group meeting immediately following the tea. For more information about specific opportunities, please contact one of our incoming VP of Volunteers, Katie St. Geme or Ingrid Davis.

In Closing
As the end of the school year gets closer, it is amazing how fast my term as your Parent Group president is going by. It is equally amazing how rapidly my children’s time at West has gone by. The time has been filled with memories of our children’s development, and recollections of hard work, good friends, and collaboration on many projects to benefit our children and school community. More on this next time.

Update on Playground Project: We will be sanding and painting the old equipment on the main playground on Thursday June 7 at 1:30. If anyone would like to help, please email Carol at carolhee@comcast.net so that we have enough supplies. We will be taking a final vote on installing the rubberized surface in the main play area at our parent group meeting on June 13. Once approved, we are hoping to install the surface in June after school lets out, and we should have a new surface for the kids to enjoy in time for late summer and the new school year. Thanks to all the West parents for your support of this project!
Crocker Site Council Nominations are Underway – Crocker School Site Council has two, two-year parent positions available beginning September 2012. The SSC is made up of parents, teachers, administrators, and students. The primary function of the group is to meet once a month and discuss issues related to curriculum and instructional practices. It is a fun way to be involved and to stay informed about programs related to Crocker’s academics and the community at large. Parent members of the SSC are elected by their peers via ballot over the summer. Any interested parents are asked to fill out the attached application (copies also available in the Crocker office) and return to the school office by June 5. If you have questions, please contact the SSC Chair Linda Himelstein at lhimelstein@gmail.com.
Upcoming School Year: 2012-2013 Excluding 5th Graders, if your child is not planning on returning to West School in the upcoming school year, 2012-2013, please contact Sorita in the front office.
